Last weekend, I went to Minneapolis/St. Paul with my wife. I learned a lot about project management from the woodchuck and geese that I met on the trip.
Let me explain.
Your Learning Habitat
My wife was away at her conference, where she is a cake decorating instructor. I took advantage of the opportunity to do something productive. It could have been writing articles, educating myself, or working on training materials. I wasn’t sure.
I was just a few blocks from the Mall of America, so I decided to go there and set up my laptop. I left the hotel and got in my car to go towards the land of materialism and commerce.
I then saw a sign for Minnesota Valley Wildlife Refuge, and made a left turn.
I quickly decided to take Kanban by David Anderson, my latest book, out on the trail to soak it all up in an environment I love.
It was amazing. I read a chapter and then went for a hike. ?Then I read another chapter and continued on with another hike. ?The Canadian Geese were a pleasant distraction as they hailed and flew overhead, often in pairs. Canadian Geese are monogamous and most couples remain together throughout their lives. ?When I see two people flying together, it brings a smile on my face.
I saw woodchucks, raccoons, and all manners of small birds. It was heaven in the middle a metropolis for me.
Josh, what’s your point?
Ahem.
My point is simple:?Make learning fun. I found that the best way to learn was to be in nature, taking walks to absorb and think between reading.
It may be completely different for you.
Maybe the concrete jungle is better than your brain. Maybe you enjoy audio podcasts, video training, or other forms of audio communication. Maybe you like heavy metal and can learn while listening to it. ?I don’t know how that’s possible but to each his own.
This weekend I learned a lot from the woodchuck and geese about project management.
