Ernesto Marquez, an independent AWS Cloud Computing specialist, also owns Concurrency Labs. He has interviewed and hired many AWS professionals.
Ernesto focuses on three pillars when Ernesto hires AWS Engineers for his team.
The AWS foundational services include EC2, S3, IAM, and RDS.
Understanding the AWS architecture design principles, such as performance, availability, cost, security, operation, and more
Non-AWS technical skills such as problem-solving and programming skills are not required.
After assessing the candidate’s foundational knowledge Ernesto will assess their architectural skills. Ernesto suggests asking three questions in order to gauge their level of proficiency.
I need your assistance to design the AWS architecture for my application. Please guide me through the steps. This scenario-based interview question allows you to assess the candidate’s knowledge of AWS architecture. It also allows you to see how they think and approach projects.
This type of hypothetical question is open-ended and can help you learn more about your candidate and how they would use their knowledge to solve your business problem.
The candidate can demonstrate their work and answer questions in an open, situational manner. This allows you to assess if the candidate’s views about how to design a solution meet your expectations.
Ernesto claims that the question was intentionally ambiguous. “I expect many questions from my candidate regarding business and technical requirements, as well as strong solutions in areas such performance, availability, cost security and operations.”
What are your experiences with AWS services that aren’t the most popular? There are many products within the AWS family that can be confusing or interdependent. Cloud professionals will almost always have a particular area of expertise, but they should be able to demonstrate a broad knowledge of product knowledge that covers most of the common suspects such as S3, EC2, RDS, and IAM.
Ernesto states, “I would expect strong knowledge about at minimum ten services and relatively novel experiences.”
He suggests that candidates dig deeper into their product knowledge to make sure it’s not just surface-level. “I would ask more specific questions about the services the candidate mentioned.”
