AWS authorized partners perform a Well-Architected Review (WAR) using AWS’s well-architected tool. This is to ensure that AWS’s infrastructure and system are well-architected. We, the consulting partner, will recommend the best practices for implementing and fixing any issues. This is based on security and operational excellence, reliability, cost optimization, and reliability.
You can read the AWS Well-Architected Review here: A WAR Case study.
Sustainability is the sixth pillar in AWS Well-Architected Framework. This pillar assists in learning design principles, best practices and operational guidelines. It also helps you to improve your sustainability goals for your workloads.
2. Why is a well-designed framework important?
A well-architected framework helps you to continuously improve your architecture. We can improve upon the areas that are lacking by reviewing the most effective architectural frameworks.
3. Sustainability is a pillar!
The world is striving to reduce carbon footprint through efficient use of resources. AWS introduced Sustainability as a new pillar. It provides best practices for energy-efficient resources at the AWS end and efficient use of resources at the customer end.
4. How can you achieve sustainability?
Six design principles are required to achieve sustainability.
# Analyze your impact. Measure the total impact of your cloud workload, and project your future impact. This includes all potential sources of influence. This information can be used to increase productivity and minimize environmental impact, as well as forecast the effects of proposed changes over time.
# Set your goals: Set long-term targets for each cloud task. For example, reduce the amount of storage and compute required per transition. Assess the financial return on Sustainability, and plan to reduce the effective intensity with each unit.
# Effective resource utilisation
# Incorporate new and efficient technology: Create a flexible work schedule to allow rapid adoption of new software and hardware options.
# Use managed services: Customers can use the AWS managed services to share the resources. You can make the most of the resources and reduce the infrastructure needed for your workload. To scale your workloads, you can use fargate and lambda services, amazon s3 lifecycle configurations and auto-scaling group to reduce your efforts.
# Limit cloud applications’ downstream effects: Use resources efficiently to improve energy efficiency and time management.
5. Best Practices to achieve Sustainability
Sustainability requires constant efforts to preserve the efficiency of resources. Effective usage of resources can be achieved by getting the most service out of them and using as few resources as possible for your workload.
# Align your resources to meet user requirements using minimal resources. Scaling options can be used to reduce excess resources and increase efficiency. Reduce the amount of resources that are not being used and stop keeping them. Reduce the number of service level arguments to reduce data retention. To reduce the distance network traffic must travel, you can choose the region that is the closest.
# Rethink your design patterns and identify under-utilized resources. You can use the AWS Serverless services to only use resources when they are needed. Keep customer hardware requirements to a minimum
